Fresh Coast is and contract extraction company for the largest cannabis brands in North America. They are a grassroots collective of cultivators and industry artisans from Northern Michigan, coming together at one of the states leading hydrocarbon extraction facilities. Inspired by their heritage, they take a viticultural approach to cannabis with a simple philosophy: craft concentrates representative of the harvest. They’re makers at heart, crafting high-quality, flavorful concentrates that are accessible to everyone.

Verken's responsibility was to take their mission and vision and curate a consistent brand across all of their various touch points. From newly designed wordmark, modular color palette, monoline illustration style, and cinematic video cinematography, all the way to their end product of packaging design, label layout, and in-store printed material. With this brand riding the edge between minimalistic in its less-is-more approach, to its ornately complex, alchemy-like illustrations, finding the balance between these two things took a fair bit of planning and work.

The packaging for all Fresh Coast products is made out of a single sheet of biodegradable hemp paper that is colored with organic dye. From this single sheet, an origami-like fold is performed to hold the product tightly and securely inside with flaps on the edge sealing the whole package from unfolding. When designing this packaging, Fresh Coast was very adamant that they wouldn't add to the massive amount of waste resulting from other brands' cheap plastic packaging. They wanted something that was friendly to the earth that allows them to create such a product. For each strand or flavor of their product, we created a consistent, yet flexible design system with a defined color palette, gridded layout, and tillable pattern that they could use for other product types and things such as merchandising and marketing in their social accounts. Creating a new and fun design for a random combination of words can sometimes be a challenge, but after some thought, each solution is fresh and unique to that specific flavor. We never duplicate, copy, or recreate the same design twice. Some are more defined while others are more abstract. When the label is placed on the product packaging, it pops out in contrast to the black and white design of the boxes. In a similar way the product brings some enjoyment and fun to your everyday life.
